GN First Annual Symposium

Health Promotion across the Spectrum of Aging:
a Gerontological Nutrition Perspective – July 18-19th, 2008

Please join us for the first Healthy Aging (HA) Dietetic Practice Group Symposium in Boca Raton, Florida. The theme and title of this event is Health Promotion across the Spectrum of Aging: a Gerontological Nutrition Perspective.  Healthy Aging is in the spot light as the first wave of Baby Boomers approach the retirement years.  Research, backed by a strong evidence base, is concluding in countless ways that nutrition is one of the key factors impacting disease management and prevention as well as in maintaining health during the aging process. With these facts as background, economic considerations for federal and state programs are positioning for prevention and an emphasis on choice moving from facility based to community based programs. Dietitians working in programs for older Americans need to be aware of these changes as well as new opportunities for nutrition care and professional growth.

Conference objectives

Participants will:
* Identify strategies to incorporate physical assessment criteria and nutrition diagnosis into home, community and/or facility based practice settings
* Explore ways to energize practice settings, expand nutrition services or seek new opportunities through reframing techniques
* Understand current research on key nutrients that support healthy aging for clients across the spectrum of aging
* Identify new, evidence based, practice opportunities in aging programs that support physical activity, disease management and medical nutrition therapy

Who should attend?

Registered dietitians, dietetic technicians, registered and certified dietary managers working in:
* community based programs
* government programs for older Americans
* home health
* adult day care programs
* retirement and assisted living communities
* Rehab and long term nursing care facilities
* Alzheimer’s and memory care facilities

Location: Boca Raton Resort and Club, Boca Raton Florida

The Boca Raton Resort and Club is one of the most historic and unique landmarks in south Florida. Designed by legendary architect, Addison Mizner over 80 years ago, the resort is a living example of the regions history and development. The property underwent extensive renovations in 2005, but retains its original charm and historic significance. The resort offers family activities as well as the spectacular Spa Palazzo. Details of the resort may be located at www.bocaresort.com

This event is being held in conjunction with the Florida Dietetic Association Annual Food and Nutrition Expo. By holding these two events back-to-back, HA DPG members are receiving the best economic advantage on room rates and conference fees possible. A limited number of hotel rooms are reserved ranging in price from $114-134 single/double and $164 for a suite. Rates include the resort fee, but not applicable tax.
